If you want to make your old home look new again, then you may find that you just have no idea where to start. This can be frustrating to say the least, but there are things that you can do to try and make it easier on yourself. This guide will give you a very good starting point.
Plan Ahead of Time
The first thing that you need to do is try and plan ahead of time. Little updates here and there can make your home feel mismatched or not quite together. If you want to create a cohesive design, then you need to take the time to plan out your look.
You need to start by going over all the plans that you have, and you need to pinpoint anything that could well be an issue for you. This will help you to make sure that you have all of the equipment you need, going forward.
Paint Everything White
You may be sick of seeing white everywhere, but this trend is not going anywhere, anytime soon. Paint the walls, the ceiling and the trim in one color if you can.
This is the best way for you to hide any uneven walls and it is also the best way for you to hide any imperfections too.
Ditch Wallpaper
If your home has wallpaper, which many old homes do, then now is the time for you to ditch it. Old wallpaper often peels away and sometimes you may find that it gets really grimy. If you have wallpaper, then you may find that there is mold underneath as well. The sooner you can remove this, the better.
Consider hiring a wallpaper remover or steamer from a hardware store as this is not a job you want to do without one. If you need to make a drywall repair, try and get this done at a similar time.
Highlight your Doors
Many older homes have fantastic features and amazing doors. They may have ornate cornicing, and this is something that most new homes simply don’t have. It is a very good idea for you to try and highlight this if you can. Paint your external doors in a nice bold color as this will help them to stand out.
You can also add some glossy paint to your cornices as well if you want them to stand out on your white walls. Compliment your internal doors by trying to paint them in a neutral shade. If you can do this, then you will soon find that everything comes together nicely.
Clean the Carpet
If you have carpet throughout, then you need to try and spruce this up if possible. You need to try and get it professionally cleaned if you can. If yours is just too worn out, then it is wise for you to invest in a new one. This will really add a lot to your home, and it will make it much easier for you to get the best result out of your home.
