Preparing Your Home For Winter

Our homes can quickly fall apart if they are not looked after and taken care of.

So as a homeowner, it is really important to invest time into your home to take care of it, as well as investing some money into it to really take care of it. This time of year is a great time to get prepping for winter, as our home’s can take a bit of a battering over the cold months. So with that in mind, here are some of the things that you can do to get your home ready, and keep your home safe and ready for winter.

Check heating and air conditioning system

Your heating system is going to get a lot of use out of it in winter, and as they don’t last forever, now is a good time to check on how yours is doing. When they are maintained well, they can last a little longer, but it is worth checking how yours is doing.

Before things get too cold, then it is a good idea to check your heating system and change your filters. Although this can be something you can do yourself, it can be something that a professional can do for you. If anything comes up as a problem, then now is the time to get it all fixed.

Clean the yard

It can be a good idea to give your yard a clean up, before the temperatures really drop, as well as things like frost takeover. After fall, there can be a lot of leaves on the ground, and if they don’t get raked up, then they can leave a lot of mess in the yard. Add in some rain or snow, and it can be a big mush by the time winter is out.

You could always look to jet-wash your driveway, which is something that you could do yourself if you have one. They can be rented, but you could always look for a company like Renew Crew, in order to help you. A lot of mud, dirt, and grime can accumulate over fall and winter, so starting off with a clean yard can make a big difference.

Seal masonry and hard surfaces

Your patio is going to need some attention too. If you have something like a concrete patio, then they can need a little love as we step into winter. Having some cracks in concrete surfaces can cause a lot of damage, especially if water gets in the gaps, and then it freezes with the winter temperatures.

So taking some time to inspect the concrete and then filling in some cracks is important, before you use some sealer. This will help concrete surfaces last and last.

Check your drainage

With winter approaching, you should make sure that the soil around your home hasn’t settled, and hasn’t created some areas for water to pool. When this happens around your foundation, then it could lead to some potential damage to your foundations, which could be disastrous for foundations, as well as any basement structures.

If there are some areas around the foundations that are low, then they need to be filled in with more ground and soil. From there, you should then go around and check rain gutters. If there are any blockages then it can cause some damage if the water isn’t draining away. You need to make sure that water drains away from the home.

Clean your gutters

When the leaves have fallen, it is a good idea to clean the gutters. If there are blockages in the gutters, then they can overflow with water. When the water in the gutters overflows, then the water will run down your home, which can cause some problems.

When the water flows down the side of your home, it can speed up some deterioration of the exterior of your home, as well as lead to potential leaks into your home. Water damage can cost a lot of money to repair, so you need to be prepared and check on your drainage. So check your guttering, before the temperature starts to freeze any water in there.

As well as getting the inside of your home ready for the holidays, it is important to check the outside of your home, to make sure that it is ready for all that winter will throw at it. Taking some steps now will mean that you can rest, relax, and enjoy all that the holiday season has to offer, without any damage, drainage problems, floods, or leaks.
