Three Ways to Build Personalized Storage Solutions

Are you sick of constantly running out of space for your things?

Don’t worry – you’re not alone. Whether you’re trying to display a huge comic collection or just want more space to store your out-of-season clothes, there are a lot of reasons to want more storage space to use. Unfortunately, one of the biggest problems with buying storage solutions like shelves and cupboards is that they’re always a fixed size.

Sure, you might get an option to have a large or small shelf, but you don’t get to control the dimensions which often means you’ll waste space in your home. There’s nothing worse than a piece of storage furniture that doesn’t fit like a glove, so here are three ways that you can build your own personalized storage solutions.

Completely bespoke storage systems

Perhaps the most effective option would be to speak to a contractor and learn more about the cost of a custom closet system. Custom closet systems will give you the most options and you can build them to size, allowing you to fill up all of the space on a wall or even build shelves and drawers to the exact size that you want. You can also paint it in the color that you want and use materials that you prefer.

This is the most expensive option because it involves a design and consultation process. However, it’s definitely the most effective option and is well worth the investment assuming you speak to a reputable contractor to help you build it.

Consider customizable storage systems

There are a number of customizable storage solutions that you can purchase from various furniture stores. These systems are relatively cheap and will give you plenty of customization options, such as different shelf sizes, railings and cupboard options. You’ll also have access to different accessories such as small hooks and shelving variations.

These systems are incredibly helpful at building a custom storage solution in the least amount of time. However, you’re not going to get a completely bespoke solution as you’re still technically buying pre-built furniture. The difference is that you have more options available and that you can swap around parts.

It’s akin to building your own cupboard or shelves out of prefabricated parts. Some higher-end storage systems will give you more options, but it can quickly get expensive and you’ll often be charged a premium for these types of semi-modular storage solutions.

Repurposing existing furniture

Lastly, the cheapest way to build a personalized storage solution is to just repurpose existing furniture that you might have. DIY storage solutions might not look pretty, but they’re usually quite effective and it helps you reuse a lot of unwanted or unused furniture.

Some common ways to add more storage options to your house is to use the walls, use hooks to hang things, use areas behind doors (such as in kitchen cabinets or closets) and to even use crawl spaces to store items whenever possible. While not an elegant solution, it can certainly give you more storage space.
