Batten Down The Hatches: Keeping Safe When You’ve Moved To A Dodgy Area

Sometimes we have to make do with our limited resources.

When we want to get onto the property ladder we may have to bite the bullet and pick somewhere that isn’t our ideal home but is good enough in the short-term. When we move to an area that isn’t exactly what we want, it can be a bit underwhelming. But there can be certain surprises that make themselves apparent further down the line.

A very good example would be if you move to an area that has a higher crime rate than you are used to. And nobody wants to move to an area that’s got a lot of crime or burglaries, but if it’s too late there are things you can do to batten down the hatches and keep yourself safe in the meantime.

Getting Adequate Protection

It sounds obvious but when your windows and doors are exposed to the elements and you live in an area where people will think nothing of smashing them, you’ve got to ensure the property is protected. There are little things you can do to deter criminals such as adding a security sign to your yard or investing in an alarm system, but you also need to think about the tell-tale signs that you give.

Many people don’t think they are advertising themselves as an easy target for a burglar, but when you start to think about displaying your jewelry in the window or being careless in your day-to-day activities, you’ve got to make sure the property is protected.

Getting To Know Your Neighbors

Most of us live in an age where we don’t really know our neighbors that well. It’s beneficial to get to know your neighbors so you can identify troublemakers. Do the neighborly thing and be polite; this could help you to identify specific neighbors that are questionable in their actions.

It’s important to get to know the patterns of certain neighbors that give the neighborhood a bad name. For example, is the neighborhood particularly noisy on a Friday night because of an arguing couple across the road? As soon as you start to identify these patterns, you can avoid them.

Staying Alert

Moving to a neighborhood should be about relaxing but if you don’t exercise any common sense this could cause problems for you. Partly it’s to do with being confident in yourself when out and about in the neighborhood to send the right message.

You also need to keep your eyes peeled to see if there are specific troubles ahead, especially if you’re walking home after dark. A lot of people feel that because it’s their neighborhood that they should stand their ground but unfortunately there’s a lot of people out there that just don’t care and will do whatever they can to exercise their authority. And if you’ve just moved into a new neighborhood you are the lowest on the pecking order.

You deserve to feel safe in your own home. And if there is a neighborhood watch scheme as well as like-minded people, it’s important to get involved. There are numerous crime prevention techniques out there but a lot of it is to do with common sense.
