Cordless Vacuum Cleaners: Expectations vs. Reality

A reality of becoming an adult is that you will have to do chores in your own house or apartment.

Without having mom around, the reality of the amount of work it took her to make your childhood home beautiful will come to light. Maintaining a clean and organized home is important to many people no matter what their age. Especially to those who have recently purchased their first house. When buying your fist appliances, if you can afford it (which many may not be able to at first), it’s good to have a brand that you trust and that gets positive reviews online. There’s nothing more disappointing than spending lots of money on an expensive appliance, then it breaking instantly or lasting less than six months. This is particularly heartbreaking when you are first starting out and can’t afford such an expense.

One of the key items to buy, without a doubt, is a vacuum cleaner. Nothing beats the feeling of making your house feel and look spotless. Especially when people are coming to visit or stay over. There’s also nothing as satisfying as vacuuming up crumbs or dust. (If you also feel this way, this is how you can tell you are getting older.)

Created in 1901, this wonderful invention has evolved over the years to include many fancy upgrades. From LCD screens to a lightweight feel and a unmistakable agility. With many models on the market to choose from within different price brackets, you are guaranteed to find the right one for you, no matter what features you want.

Fast forwarding to the current year of 2019.

It’s clear that we take advantage of these state-of-the-art upgrades (understandably so), forgetting what it was like when vacuum cleaners had lengthy cords that tied you to certain areas of your house with the use of a plug socket. They were also incredibly heavy. It was difficult to carry up the stairs and they were not flexible in where they could reach. Meaning that you couldn’t reach under the couch properly or indoor the corners of each room.

Hooray for innovation! In 1979, Cordless vacuum cleaners were born and from the first model, have moved with technological innovation. For those with a two-story house, they are perfect for carrying up the stairs, especially if they are lightweight. This is key for older people who don’t have the strength to transport heavier models. They are also great for apartments and one-story houses when you want a quick and easy cleanup job.

Many models also come with adaptable nozzles and settings, meaning you can adjust it to the space that requires cleaning, as well as a handy wall mount, so you can grab the vacuum quicker without having to rifle in the closet for it. Safer than the traditional models as you won’t get caught up in the wire, they are perfect for those with children or animals.

What about the noise level?

Remember when you used to get woken up by your mom vacuuming? As you are now the one who does most (or all) of the cleaning in your house, you’ll understand the frustration of when someone is trying to talk to you when you’re hoovering and you can’t hear over the noise. Newer models of cordless vacuum cleaners are built to make less sound. This makes them less disruptive and more appealing to the ear.

So do they live up to the hype?

There are, of course, a few downsides to a cordless vacuum cleaner. As they do not require an outlet to work, you have to ensure that they are fully charged before you try and do a full sweep of the house. If you use them on high power mode, the battery is quickly drained. So you may not be able to clean every room in time. This issue is starting to be resolved by the use of lithium batteries in the vacuum cleaners, that last longer.

Home really is where the heart is. When building your life in your new home, it’s important to feel completely comfortable in your surroundings. One of the first steps of this is through having a house that you are proud of. This results in you feeling happy with what you have built. Even if you aren’t the most organized person, the feeling of a decluttering and cleaning is great. It’ll put you at ease and make you feel more relaxed, with a space that you can’t wait to invite people around too.
