5 Home-Related Checks (And How Often They Need To Be Done)

Every homeowner is aware of the need to maintain certain elements of their home.

They conduct regular checks and schedule routine services. However, which of these checks are the most important? How often they should be completed? The answer is often less well known.

Hoping to ensure that the most crucial elements of your home are always in the best possible condition? Here are five home checks you’ll need to do and a guide as to how frequently they should be performed.

#1 – Roof and gutters

Roof and gutter problems can be genuinely nightmarish for homeowners. They can potentially result in serious damage that costs a small fortune to repair. If you want to ensure you never need to know how to fix a broken gutter, or experience leaks due to broken roof tiles, it’s best to visually inspect your roof at least once every six months. Just remember to be cautious and use safety equipment to do so. Or, as an extra precaution, ask a local roofer to perform the inspection on your behalf.

#2 – Air conditioning

Central air is vital for the vast majority of households, ensuring your home is comfortable and pleasant to live in even when the external temperatures spike. Wondering why your central AC is blowing warm air or simply failing to function at all? It’s essential to have your HVAC serviced annually. Replace the filters every two to three months as well.

#3 – Carbon monoxide detector

A carbon monoxide detector is essential for any home. But it’s important to remember to check that your detector is functional frequently – ideally every month. Most carbon monoxide detectors will have a “test battery” function. All you need to do is press a button and await a confirmation that the device is operating as it should. Obviously, if the test shows the batteries need to be changed, it’s best to do so as soon as possible.

#4 – Decking

When it comes to your outdoor space, decking can be surprisingly hazardous. The biggest concern in this regard is moss or algae growth. Both can make decking incredibly slippery, while also dramatically reducing the aesthetic appeal of the area.

To avoid slips and falls, and prevent further degradation, use a flashlight to inspect your decking every three months. If you notice any signs of mold, a bleach-based cleaner is usually the best choice for removal.

#5 – Unused water sources

If there are any water sources in your home that are not used regularly – for example, a bathroom that is only used when guests are staying with you – then it’s best to “refresh” the water every week. It’s thought that refreshing water sources helps to prevent mold and mineral deposits from building up. This helps to prevent damage to pipes, toilets, sinks, and showers.

All you need to do is flush each toilet, and run water through sinks and showers for a few minutes. It’s well worth including this step in your weekly cleaning routine.

By ensuring you complete the home checks detailed above at the right intervals, you can avoid inconvenient issues. You will save money by avoiding the need to pay for repairs, and enjoy a smooth-running home long into the future.
