When we design our offices or other work spaces, we think about productivity.
We try to arrange the space so that everyone can get to what they need. We try to give our staff a little personal space. If you have customers come into your workplace, you’ll also think about displays, space to move around and of course, health and safety. But, do you think about comfort?
Comfort is a crucial ingredient when trying to create a more productive work space. Comfortable staff are happy. They enjoy their work. They can get more done, and they might even feel more creative. Keeping yourself, and your team comfortable can also reduce health issues, improve posture and help your staff to go home feeling good, ready to relax, unwind and get some rest.
If you send them home with achy muscles and limbs, they won’t enjoy their evenings, they could develop long-term back problems, they won’t sleep well, and they won’t want to come back to work the next day. When they do, they won’t be raring to go. Nor will they be able to work to their best.
On the other hand, you don’t want to be too comfortable. You don’t want to find yourself falling asleep. You want to find that right balance. So that you are comfortable and happy but still alert and focused. Here are some tips to help you to get it just right.
Get The Temperature Right
No one wants to be sitting at their desk, so cold that they can’t type. But, you don’t want to be that hot that you feel sweaty, sleepy and uncomfortable either. HVAC services can help you to get your settings just right, to help to keep the atmosphere bright and alert, without freezing everyone.
Keep It Tidy
Mess and clutter pose many risks. You could trip and hurt yourself, you won’t be able to find things when you need them, and you will struggle to feel peaceful and clear-headed. Whether you work alone or manage a large store, cleanliness is crucial. Keep the floors clean and well swept, clear off the desks and try to encourage your staff to keep their own spaces organised and tidy.
Get Your Desk Setup Sorted
Getting your desks and chairs right can improve posture, productivity and comfort. Chairs and desks should be at a level so that knees aren’t above hips, but you can look straight forward at the monitor. Wrists should rest comfortably when you type and your chair should be soft and comfortable while keeping your back straight and supported. The set up should be tailored to each person. We’re all different shapes and sizes after all.
Brighten Things Up
Soft lighting can feel comfortable, but it can strain your eyes and give you headaches at work. Keep the walls light, and make sure the lights are bright, yet natural. Try to maximise the use of natural light as much as possible.
Bring Nature In
Natural elements and additions like plants and flowers brighten a space and clean the air. But, they also help us to feel relaxed and peaceful.
